The love of knitting

written by Room 113

During Explorations, we have discovered a love of knitting.  We have explored finger knitting, straw weaving and needle knitting.  We read a book called "Extra Yarn" by Mac Barnett.  It is illustrated by Jon Klassen....he also illustrated the book "I Want my Hat Back."  We love that book!
Two weeks ago, Catherine visited our classroom to teach us about spinning sheep's wool.  She used her foot to spin the wheel.  She used a niddy noddy to make a skane of wool.  We had never seen a niddy noddy before.  We got to keep the skanes of wool.  One is turquoise and one is turquoise and white.  She showed us different kinds of wool...some of it was raw and some of it was clean.  She talked to us about knitting and told us that if we could knit, we could learn to cast on....that's the next thing we're going to work on.  Knitting is calming, relaxing and makes you feel happy.
Catherine is coming back to visit us soon.  She is going to show us how to make natural colour dyes!  We can't wait for her to come back!!!
