Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-Up 2014

written by Klara & Anika

On Wednesday, the Grade 3&4 classes participated in the Shoreline Clean-Up.  We worked with some kids from the High School.  We walked to the beach for the shoreline clean-up.  We cleaned up some of the town on our way.  It made our town look nice.  We saw people we knew while we were on the walk.  We were surprised at the amount of garbage we collected.  We hope people will respect our town and use garbage cans and recycling bins.
The Shoreline Clean-Up makes our town a happier place!

Terry Fox Walk 2014

"It's got to keep going without me." ~ Terry Fox

The students of SSES kept Terry's walk going during our annual Terry Fox Walk.
The importance of this day was celebrated and honored throughout our school.
Each of the students proudly wore a sticker honoring the people they were running for, including Terry Fox.  We are so proud of the humanity and kindness our children share.

The Potato Project

written by Jayden

In the spring, the grade 2s planted potatoes with Mrs. Chapnick in our raised garden beds.  I went home and told Afi about planting potatoes.  I told him that you're not supposed to cut the eyes off of the potatoes.  He usually cuts the eyes off.  So we made a bet!  I planted potatoes with the eyes still on and Afi cut the eyes off of his potato seed.  We planted our potatoes in our gardens and waited for them to grow.  At the end of August we dug up our potatoes.  My potatoes were bigger than Afi's ~ way bigger!!!!  I won the bet!  We made mashed potatoes and they were really good.  It was fun making a bet with my Afi.  I love gardening!

A special thank you to Mrs. Chapnick, Mrs. Korolyk, Mr. Ostapchuk and all of our teachers for giving children the opportunity to garden!

Following the Compost Pail

This is our compost bucket.  Each classroom in our school has one.

Mrs. Chapnick is pouring our compost into the big compost.  We do this every few days.

This is what it looks like inside the green compost bin.  We think it looks a little yucky!

We are taking the green compost bin out to the main composter.

This is inside of the big compost box.  It's already turning to soil.  We use the soil in our gardens.  We found a peach pit in our flower bed the first day of school.  Now we know where it came from!

It's a little stinky, slimy and even a little bit gross.  But, it makes great soil!

We all got to have a look inside!

SSES awarded Eco-Globe Transformational Status!

In June, SSES was awarded Eco-Globe Transformational Status!  SSES is only the third school in Manitoba to be awarded this status!  The Eco-Globe status is awarded to schools in Manitoba that have created a school culture that promotes and integrates Education for Sustainable Development.  This is a true celebration for our school and honours the dedication and commitment of each child and adult in our building!  Mrs. Chapnick is a true leader in being a contributing global citizen and creating a sustainable future!  Through her leadership, we have established an incredible recycling and composting program, built an awareness of conservation and care for our environment  and offered the lifelong experience of gardening for all children.  Our students are to be commended for their commitment to creating a positive carbon footprint for the Earth!
